Mathematics at St. Saviour's

Curriculum Aims

The aims of St Saviour’s C of E Primary School reflect those of the 2014 National Curriculum for maths, which are that children:

● Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

● Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

● Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At St. Saviour's, these concepts are taught by following the White Rose maths teaching programme, and are further embedded by allowing pupils to demonstrate their understanding at a deeper level following the Maths Hub Mastery approaches.  The Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 aim to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense very early on in a child's education, encouraging children to become flexible with their numbers and calculations. This is executed by strategically following the Mastering Number at Reception and Key Stage 1 programme.

Home Learning

Pupils are given many opportunities to embed the skills learnt in school by engaging in out of school activities. We take a strong approach to encouraging pupils to use online platforms when further embedding their mathematical knowledge.

Smart Money Award

St. Saviour's recently had the pleasure of being presented with 'The Smart Money Award' from HSBC bank for having worked closely with the bank and ensuring that every pupil received sessions based on handling money and looking at finances for their further. This was a great opportunity for pupils to bring together their mathematical skills and apply them to concepts of our RSHE curriculum.
