What is SEND?

SEND stands for special educational needs or disabilities. Children and young people with SEND may need more support to learn than the majority of their peers. Some may have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of the educational facilities provided for learners.

What is SEND?

SEND Support

SEN Support is the system by which schools should assess the needs of children, and then provide appropriate support.

The system should follow four stages, often referred to as a 'cycle': Assess, Plan, Do, Review.  For further information about this cycle, often referred to as the 'graduated approach', see Chapter 6 of the SEND Code of Practice 2015.

Education, Health and Care Plan

An Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) is a document which details the education, health and social care needs of a child or young person. It details what is needed in their early years setting or school, beyond that which the school or setting can provide.
